Does the start sound differ from the alarm?
Yes. A short rising cue plays when you start, and a different alarm plays when time is up.
Will it work if my screen locks or I close the tab?
Only while the page is open. The countdown keeps time from your device clock in a background tab, but phones and laptops can pause or silence web pages when they sleep, lock or close the tab. For anything that really matters, also set your device's own alarm.
