Rough times for a large egg
These are common starting points for a large egg lowered into boiling water straight from the fridge: about 6 minutes for a runny yolk, 7 for jammy, 9 for medium and 11 for hard. Smaller eggs, room-temperature eggs and altitude change the result, so adjust to taste.
Cool the eggs in cold water when the alarm goes. Cooking more than eggs? Use the kitchen timer or multiple timers.

Should I start timing from cold water?
These presets assume the eggs go into water that is already boiling.
Will it work if my screen locks or I close the tab?
Only while the page is open. The countdown keeps time from your device clock in a background tab, but phones and laptops can pause or silence web pages when they sleep, lock or close the tab. For anything that really matters, also set your device's own alarm.
